Country Facts - Vietnam and other countries

Vietnam

  • The first case of HIV was detected at the end of 1990. As of September 2000, there have been 24,151 reported cases of HIV; 3,903 have developed into AIDS, and 2,035 people have died.
  • However, UNAIDS estimated that at least 99,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS as of December 1999, 20,000 of them are women.
  • Women living with HIV make up 13.5% of the total, and are increasing. In some southern provinces, the proportion has reached nearly 50%.[i]
  • HIV/AIDS infection rates among pregnant women increased from 0.02% in 1994 to 0.12% by the end of 1998. [ii]
