THE BEIJING+5 REVIEW PROCESS

Back

Videos, Publications, Posters
and Web Sites - the Exhibition

“Great impact”, professional image”, “wow”, “it really adds class”, were some of the many positive comments we received about our 2.3m by 3.0m video screen, bearing the UNIFEM name and symbol. “It allowed me to see what was going on in other countries” was another comment. The video wall was flanked by a panel display, a publications table, a poster display and a computer display showing the web sites of the regional UNIFEM offices and some partners.

The video screen in its 4m by 5m blue frame with white lettering took centre place in the UNIFEM display, and was visible from all parts of the lobby exhibition areas, and from the upstairs balcony near the refreshment shop - which was just as well, as many Meeting participants didn't have enough time to sit on the seats we had thoughtfully provided, but did have spare moments to take in our videos while they grabbed coffe and snacks. The programme for the video screen ran continously for the whole Meeting, and covered women's issues for the entire Asia-Pacifc region. The Bangkok office put together a 10-minute animated presentation on the role and activities of UNIFEM in the Asia-Pacific related to Beijing+5, and supported it with selected videos from a variety of sources including other UNIFEM regional offices, and partner organisations and NGOs. Our thanks go to all those whose videos we featured.

The panel display picked up the blue and white style of the video wall, and was informative, attractive and imposing. The Panels covered six themes including (1) where UNIFEM has operated - a collage of photos of women in the Asia-pacific region (2) women in economics (3) women in politics (4) women’s rights as human rights (5) violence against women, and (6) women in the 21st Century - images and quotes from partner organisations. For those interested in content, the panel provided an informative overview of the womens issues in the region. Participants were especially interested in the quotes on women in the 21st century. For those not as drawn to content, the panels still made an impact. They were reported to be visually appealing, showed UNIFEM's interests, and demonstrated UNIFEMs commitment to women’s issues in the Asia pacific. Participants loved the photos!

“There’s something wrong. Its simple, its clear and it’s about economics…and I can understand it”, said American Kathleen Hendrix, adviser to the President's Interagency Council on Women, as she read through UNIFEM's briefing kit on ‘Women in a Global Economy’.

UNIFEM’s free publications were extremely popular among delegates. Publications included UNIFEM E&SEARO’s briefing kits on Women in a Global Economy, Trafficking in Women and Children Mekong Sub-region, and Violence against Women; publications from the UNIFEM E&SEARO Economic Empowerment series; the 1998 UNIFEM Annual Report; UNIFEM SARO publications Carrying the Beijing Torch in South Asia and Sustainable Interventions for Poverty Alleviation; and other UNIFEM related materials. Up to 200 copies of each publication were given away over the four days of the conference. Posters donated by UNIFEM SARO were also popular among delegates.

The Bangkok office also set up a computer that displayed the websites of UNIFEM and a number of partner organisations, with the computer images projected on to a screen for wider viewing. This display aimed at pointing participants toward another source of information on women’s issues in the region, and give people an opportunity to familiarise themselves with websites and their value in disseminating information on women’s issues. As it turned out, participants were too short of time to sit in front of the computer, although the web projection still added to the impact of UNIFEMs overall display. In future we might turn this display into a self-running presentation highlighting relevant websites.

Laufitu Taylor, the RPA from our UNIFEM Pacific office surprises everyone - herself included - by being seen using the computer!

The video wall looked deceptively simple from the front - just like a (very) large TV set. But behind the scenes our contractor had a table full of boxes, cables and monitors, all assembled and maintained with hard work and expertise .
