UNIFEM Asia-Pacific Activities for
the Campaign on Elimination of Violence Against Women

Public Awareness Raising

  • Artistic performances (dances, music, street plays) will be organized to promote "A Life Free of Violence" – South Asia

  • Posters with messages that violence against women and girls in the family is wrong and cannot be tolerated will be produced and distributed for display in schools and public areas such as bus stops and on public transportation – East and Southeast Asia

  • An educational theatre group will develop a performance about violence in the family, and perform it during a national information and awareness raising tour - Philippines.

Information Development and Dissemination

  • Posters and information sheets will be developed and distributed to police stations on rights of women and the responsibilities of the police officials in terms of ensuring women's legal rights to adequate and fair treatment – South Asia
  • Educational material on the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women (CEDAW) will be produced to raise the awareness of NGOs working on women's human rights – Pacific
  • A regional roadmap showcasing "who is doing what" on elimination of violence against women and highlighting best practices will be developed to enhance information exchange and collaboration of organizations – East and Southeast Asia

Activities to Promote "A Life Free of Violence"

Associated with the annual 16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence (25 Nov. - 10 Dec.);

  • a walkathon and fair will be organized to highlight activities on women's human rights by NGOs, youth groups, government ministries and others – Thailand
  • a rally and concert will be held to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Fiji
  • a march will be organized to bring together women's organizations and raise awareness about violence against women – South Asia
  • An essay contest will be organized for college students on the theme of violence against women and how to promote a life free of violence for women and girls – South Asia
  • A mural competition will be held for the best design with a message to end violence against women – Pacific

Workshops/Seminars

  • Seminars for journalists will be held on how to report on violence against women – South Asia
  • A Public hearing will be organized with a panel of judges and lawyers to receive and adjudicate testimonies of victims of violence -- South Asia
  • A regional workshop on human rights will be held to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Pacific
  • A seminar on State Violence Against Women will help bring the issue to light and initiate open discussion - Indonesia

UNIFEM is also active in the prevention and elimination of violence against women through projects that are supported by the UNIFEM Trust Fund.
