EVAW Day: New actions to end violence against women in China

Beijing, 10 December 2008 --  UNIFEM China, in collaboration with the United Nations Theme Group on Gender (China), the Anti-Domestic Violence Network, and internet company NetEase, held an event on November 25 in Beijing to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The event attracted almost 100 attendees and focused on the “New Actions” being taken around China in the efforts to eliminate violence against women, as well as the announcement that more than 205,000 people in China had added their names online to UNIFEM Say NO to Violence Against Women campaign.

The event opened with an expert panel discussion on new government recommendations on preventing and addressing domestic violence, the recently released judicial guidelines on domestic violence and divorce, the announcement of a UN joint programme on the elimination of violence against women in China, and using the internet as a valuable platform for advocacy and EVAW. 

Mr. Tan Yongqiang a 22 year old student from the Guangxi Electrical Profession Institute - one of the winning blog advocates. .

Panellists included: Ms. Jiang Yue’e, Director General, Department of the Protection of Women’s Rights and Interests, the All China Women’s Federation (ACWF); Ms. Chen Min, from the China Institute for Applied Jurisprudence of the PRC Supreme People’s Court, Ms. Yasuyo Yamaguchi, Programme Specialist UNIFEM China, Ms. Chen Ben Jian, Director, Anti-Domestic Violence Network, Ms. Cui Ying, Director, NetEase Beijing, and Ms. Constance Thomas, Director ILO (and facilitator).

Further, NetEase announced the winners of an online blog competition on domestic violence.  These winners were selected by a group of experts from more than 8000 entries, and the five top bloggers, including a lawyer, student, researcher and engineer, were presented with awards from UNIFEM and NetEase and each delivered an impassioned statement on EVAW.
