Regional Conference on Advancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Muslim Societies

Government, NGOs, intellectuals and other stakeholders from across South East Asia came together to find practical ways to advance gender equality in Muslim societies in Jakarta, Indonesia from 11 to 12 March 2009.

The Regional Conference on Advancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Muslim Societies, hosted by UNIFEM and the International Centre for Islam and Pluralism (ICIP) provided a platform to discuss issues and challenges for gender equality and Islam and effective tools and strategies to advance gender equality in Muslim societies. Specific attention was given to women’s political participation with an inspirational speech from the Hon. Shukria Barazkai MP from Afghanistan. Innovative strategies to eliminate violence against women were also highlighted. The event also featured an exploration of identity politics, pluralism and gender equality in Muslim societies.

The keynote address was delivered by eminent scholar on women and Islam, Asma Barlas. Speakers also included respected academics Amina Wadud and Farish Noor, among other respected practitioners from South East Asia. The conference generated Recommended Actions for advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in Muslim Societies.
