Judges from Thailand and Vietnam visited the Philippines for Knowledge Sharing on Gender Equality and the Judiciary

UNIFEM’s CEDAW Southeast Asia Programme is working with court systems in the region to improve the understanding of CEDAW among judges and court personnel with a view to strengthening gender-responsiveness of the judiciary.

In Southeast Asia, the Philippines has made remarkable stride on this front thanks to concerted efforts by key stakeholders including the Supreme Court’s Committee on Gender Responsiveness in the Judiciary, the Philippine Judicial Academy, the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women.

The Supreme Court of the Philippines thus hosted a study visit of 17 judges and gender equality advocates from Thailand and Vietnam. The visit on 15-18 January 2008 provided a forum for Philippine, Thai and Vietnamese judges and participants to exchange of knowledge, experience and strategies. For the duration, participants learnt about aspects of the Gender and Development mainstreaming programme of the Philippine judiciary, and engaged in dialogue with partners and stakeholders of the programme. They also explored the possibility of establishing a regional cooperation on gender equality and the judiciary.

The study visit represented part of sustained efforts by UNIFEM’s CEDAW Southeast Asia Programme on institutional capacity building, and it followed a Southeast Asia regional colloquium on the Role of the Judiciary in Promoting Gender Equality in October 2007 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
